How to Use a Body Scrub? Steps for Soft, Glowing Skin

Taking care of your skin isn't limited to facial care: your body deserves our full attention, too. Body exfoliation is an essential beauty routine for restoring smooth skin, free of dead skin cells and ready for moisturizing treatments.

Why use a body scrub?

Our skin naturally renews itself, but this process can be slowed down by stress, pollution, hormonal changes, or even aging. As a result, dead skin cells accumulate on the skin's surface, making the complexion dull, rough, and uneven.

A body scrub, also called an exfoliant, is used to deeply cleanse the skin and promote:

  • Elimination of dead cells : it removes impurities and frees pores, allowing the skin to breathe better

  • Cell renewal : by removing dead cells, exfoliation accelerates skin regeneration

  • Stimulation of microcirculation : the circular massage activates blood circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the epidermis

  • Refining of skin texture : the skin becomes softer, smoother, with a velvety feel

  • Blemish prevention : by unclogging pores, exfoliation limits spots on the back, arms or chest.

  • Better absorption of care : after exfoliation, the skin better absorbs moisturizing or nourishing active ingredients, but also self-tanners or care oils

  • Preparation for waxing or tanning : it helps prevent ingrown hairs, ensures a more even tan and a long-lasting tan .

Which body scrub should you choose?

There are different types of scrubs and exfoliating treatments, to choose from depending on your skin type, sensory preferences and beauty goals.

For sensitive skin

Opt for a fine-grained scrub made from rice powder, very finely ground apricot kernels, or natural enzymes. Choose a gentle cream or gel formula without harsh fragrances.

For normal to combination skin

A sugar or salt scrub, enriched with vegetable oils, offers a good balance between exfoliating effectiveness and comfort. This type of texture often transforms into a milk upon contact with water, for easy rinsing.

For dry or very rough skin

Choose an oily scrub or exfoliating butter, rich in nourishing fatty substances (shea, coconut, sweet almond). It softens the skin while removing dead skin, without drying out.

For a firming or draining effect

Some scrubs are enriched with caffeine, algae, or invigorating essential oils. Perfect for massaging the thighs, buttocks, or stomach to boost circulation.

How many body scrubs per week?

The ideal frequency depends on your skin type and lifestyle:

  • Sensitive or dry skin : once a week is enough to avoid irritation

  • Normal to oily skin : up to twice a week to keep skin clear

  • In summer or before hair removal : exfoliation is recommended to even out the skin and prevent ingrown hairs.

Avoid exfoliating if you have irritated, cut, sunburned, or recently waxed skin. In these cases, the skin is more fragile and requires rest and moisturizing care.

How to use a body scrub?

Prepare your skin

First, take a hot shower for a few minutes. The steam opens pores, softens skin, and helps remove dead skin cells. This also allows the active ingredients in the scrub to penetrate better.

Apply your scrub and massage

Take a generous amount of scrub into your hands. On damp or slightly dry skin (depending on the type of product), apply it to specific areas: arms, stomach, legs, buttocks, etc. Use slow circular motions for gentle but effective exfoliation.

There's no need to scrub vigorously: the grains of the scrub do the work. Focus on rough areas such as:

  • elbows

  • the knees

  • the heels

  • the back of the arms (often subject to keratosis pilaris)

Take this moment as a well-being treatment, massaging slowly.

Rinse thoroughly

Rinse with warm water to thoroughly remove all grit and product residue. Finish with a cold water spray, if possible , to tone the skin, close pores, and boost circulation.

Moisturize the skin

After exfoliation, the skin is particularly receptive to care. Apply a nourishing balm, a moisturizing milk or a dry oil to restore the skin barrier and deeply hydrate the skin.

From adolescence, when the skin begins to produce more sebum and dead cells accumulate more quickly.

Can you use a facial scrub on your body?

It's best to avoid: facial scrubs are gentler and less abrasive. Body scrubs require coarser grains for effective exfoliation.

Does exfoliation help prevent ingrown hairs?

Absolutely. Exfoliating regularly prevents hair from growing under the skin, especially before or after waxing.

Can you exfoliate dry skin?

Some oil- or sugar-based scrubs are designed for use on dry skin, which provides more intense exfoliation. However, for sensitive skin, it's best to use them on wet skin.

What time of day should you exfoliate?

Evening is ideal: the skin can regenerate overnight, away from external aggressions such as UV rays or pollution.
